چکیده

Inhibition is a cognitive ability that allows humans to respond flexibly rather than reflexively to events. The purpose of this investigation is to elucidate the neural basis of inhibition in healthy humans. Combining magnetoencephalography and functional MRI, two unqiue brain imaging instruments, allows both key brain regions and the timing of neuronal processes involved with inhibition to be resolved. The study found strong evidence that the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex is an important component in programming inhibitory signals.

Combined MEG and fMRI model

An integrated model for magnetoencephalography (MEG) and functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) is proposed. In the proposed model, MEG and fMRI outputs are related to the corresponding aspects of neural activities in a voxel. Post synaptic potentials (PSPs) and action potentials (APs) are two main signals generated by neural activities. In the model, both of MEG and fMRI are related to t...

MANOUELA VESSELINOVA VALTCHEVA Neural Activation Differences in a Model of Cognitive Control: an fMRI Study of Good and Poor Performers During Saccade Tasks (Under the Direction of JENNIFER MCDOWELL)

MANOUELA VESSELINOVA VALTCHEVA Neural Activation Differences in a Model of Cognitive Control: an fMRI Study of Good and Poor Performers During Saccade Tasks (Under the Direction of JENNIFER MCDOWELL) Cognitive control is responsible for planning, cognitive flexibility, working memory, and inhibition. The antisaccade task is a good measure of inhibition as it requires the subject to inhibit look...

Where left becomes right: a magnetoencephalographic study of sensorimotor transformation for antisaccades.

To perform a saccadic response to a visual stimulus, a 'sensorimotor transformation' is required (i.e., transforming stimulus location into a motor command). Where in the brain is this accomplished? While previous monkey neurophysiology and human fMRI studies examined either parietal cortex or frontal eye field, we studied both of these regions simultaneously using magnetoencephalography (MEG)....

Tracking neural coding of perceptual and semantic features of concrete nouns

We present a methodological approach employing magnetoencephalography (MEG) and machine learning techniques to investigate the flow of perceptual and semantic information decodable from neural activity in the half second during which the brain comprehends the meaning of a concrete noun. Important information about the cortical location of neural activity related to the representation of nouns i...

Abnormally persistent fMRI activation during antisaccades in schizophrenia: a neural correlate of perseveration?

OBJECTIVE Impaired antisaccade performance is a consistent cognitive finding in schizophrenia. Antisaccades require both response inhibition and volitional motor programming, functions that are essential to flexible responding. We investigated whether abnormal timing of hemodynamic responses (HDRs) to antisaccades might contribute to perseveration of ocular motor responses in schizophrenia. We ...
